TY for this TIMELY YTV. Even though your video was 5 months ago, I saw it today[7Sep24. I'm painting two 14"x16" Wild Roses with dark blue as my backgrounds. Well, I've painted the wild roses this morning BUT couldn't decide how I wanted to paint the backgrounds. TY, TY, TY--Your YTV solved my problem perfectly. This is EXACTLY how I want my watercolor backgrounds to look. [PS. You KNOW this WOULD be a commission. if it was for me--i would have 'no problem'!] Again, TYVM

Thank you, Kathy! Even good paintings often look awkward at the middle stage, but the finished paintings still look great.
I like this technique, and fog can be painted from the dark gray background. But, if you had green foliage it would be difficult to create fog because you cannot use green from the background. Then what do you do?
If you can't lift color, I use opaque white to cover the color. Pro White by Daler Rowny and Bleed Proof White by Dr. Martin are both great opaque whites that cover well. Keep painting!

Thank you for demonstrating how to use that magic eraser in the proper way! It works great but is still abrasive (so maybe 3 times) & rinse it out won’t start removing your paper 😊!
Rub your paper about as hard as you would a little girl's cheek. And some papers hold up to repeated use better than others. I use Arches 140 lb. Cold pressed and it is tough stuff.

You can do it, Cathy! Try lots of different instructors until you find one that clicks with you. As long as you keep painting, you'll develop your own style.

You are very welcome, Maria! Adding fog to any painting gives it more interest - you can use opaque white to add fog to paintings you've already painting, also.

Wonderful! Red cardinals are always a great subject - the red stands out and is pretty.
For the white you used at the end that is watercolor or acrylic or gouache? My watercolor is too light for that effect 😮
Student grade watercolor paints won't have as much pigment as the professional grade paints, and Qor brand has the most vivid colors that don't fade as they dry. Student grade paints often need several coats to equal the color saturation you see in the video. The white paint I use is Bleed Proof white by Dr. Martin but Pro White by Daler Rowney is just as good. Hope that helps.

Hello DEb. I can understand your feelings 'I feel a bit cheated that I didn't get any help in learning about art and watercolor until adulthood'. In our time knowledge was kept to themselves. Some people still do it today. It's a power play. I had a close friend that would take from me but never share in return. Also an accounting lady, And workplace people. This happened to my mother as well. I hope the people on here will reverse this behaviour. I really appreciate your sharing. The other lady that shares willingly is 'The Art Sherpa'. Google is great for unselfish people who share. So there must be many in life this has happened to. Times are changing. thank you so much.
Thank you so much for a watercolour still life tutorial. Sometimes it seems as though watercolour is only about landscapes-there isn’t too much out there for those of us with other interests.
You can do anything with watercolor from soft and light watery paintings to photo realistic paintings - it is a wonderful medium to use.
